At 10:25 p.m. local time, Mount Semeru erupted, generating a pyroclastic flow that moved approximately 5 km from its summit. The ash plume ascended roughly 2,000 meters above the crater, reaching an altitude of 5,676 meters above sea level.
Officials reported that the ash column ranged from white to gray, with denser concentrations directed east and southeast. Seismographs captured the eruption with a maximum amplitude of 27 mm, which persisted for 696 seconds.
The volcano's alert status is currently at Level III. Authorities emphasize that the public must refrain from any activities in the southeastern areas along Besuk Kobokan within 13 km of the summit. It’s also crucial to maintain a distance of at least 500 meters from the banks of Besuk Kobokan to mitigate risks associated with lava flows and pyroclastic events, which could potentially reach up to 17 km from the crater.
Residents are cautioned about the hazards of lava and pyroclastic flows in adjacent rivers and valleys near Mount Semeru, notably in Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, Besuk Sat, and smaller tributaries. Regions within a 5 km radius of the crater face extreme danger due to the threat of ejected hot rocks.
