Violent clashes associated with the ongoing protests in Iran have resulted in a reported 35 fatalities, according to activist organizations, with unrest persisting despite intensified security measures.
The Human Rights Activists News Agency, based in the U.S., disclosed on Tuesday that over 1,200 individuals have been detained during demonstrations entering their second consecutive week. The casualties include 29 protestors, four minors, and two members of the Iranian security forces. Protests have been documented in upwards of 250 locations across 27 of Iran’s 31 provinces, indicating the widespread nature of the discontent.
This agency relies on an extensive network of activists within Iran and has consistently provided reliable data during previous upheavals. Concurrently, state-affiliated media in Iran have acknowledged injuries among law enforcement. The semi-official Fars news agency reported that approximately 250 police and 45 Basij volunteer forces sustained injuries during confrontations with protestors.
Tensions are escalating internationally as well. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that the U.S. would intervene should peaceful demonstrators face violent repression. His comments were met with stern reactions from Iranian authorities, who issued threats towards U.S. military personnel in the region. This warning gained prominence following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a key ally of Tehran by U.S. forces.
Current protests are being called the largest since 2022, which saw nationwide demonstrations triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini in custody. Though not yet as intense as prior protests, the current unrest reflects significant public discontent stemming from economic and political grievances.
Iran’s economy has been hindered by heightened sanctions and the repercussions of a brief conflict with Israel. The national currency plummeted last December, with the rial dropping to nearly 1.4 million per U.S. dollar, sparking protests prompted by skyrocketing prices and deteriorating living conditions.
Grasping the full impact of the demonstrations is challenging due to limited coverage from state media and strict regulations facing journalists. Much information comes from brief online videos showcasing crowds chanting and the sounds of gunfire resonating in the backdrop.
Despite stern warnings from Iran's leaders and heightened security measures, protests persist, indicating that public dissatisfaction remains unquenched and that the situation remains volatile and uncertain.
