Nationwide Protests Erupt in Iran; Casualties Reported

Nationwide Protests Erupt in Iran; Casualties Reported

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Demonstrations triggered by Iran's deteriorating economic situation erupted beyond the capital on Thursday, reaching rural areas and resulting in at least seven fatalities, according to Iranian officials. The deceased included both protesters and security personnel, marking the first reported fatalities since the protests began.

The increasing violence may indicate a potential shift towards a harsher government crackdown. Although protests in Tehran have decreased, unrest has intensified in provincial cities, especially among the Lur ethnic community.

Violent Clashes Across Regions

The most severe incidents occurred in Azna, a city approximately 300 kilometers southwest of Tehran. Social media videos depicted burning debris in streets, gunfire reverberating through neighborhoods, and protesters chanting against the ruling authorities.

Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency reported three fatalities in Azna, although state media's coverage of the violence has been limited. Obtaining independent verification remains a challenge, as reporters have faced arrests in previous unrest.

Gunfire Reports in the South

In Lordegan, situated in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, videos emerged of large crowds amidst gunfire. Fars indicated that two individuals died during protests on Thursday, according to an anonymous official.

The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran confirmed the deaths in Lordegan as those of demonstrators. An image was also released showing what appeared to be an Iranian police officer in riot gear.

This region has a track record of unrest, with major protests in 2019 relating to contaminated medical equipment allegations.

Deaths Confirmed in Central Iran

In Fuladshahr, located in Isfahan province, state reports confirmed a man's death during protests. Activists claim police opened fire on demonstrators, though no further information has been provided by authorities.

A separate incident in Kouhdasht (also in Lorestan province) resulted in the death of a 21-year-old Basij volunteer amid protests. Officials attributed the death to “rioters” and reported injuries to at least 13 security officers.

Recognition of Economic Woes

Local authorities acknowledged that inflation, currency devaluation, and economic struggles were fueling the protests. The rial has plummeted, with the U.S. dollar reportedly trading at around 1.4 million rials.

Officials called for calm and urged that public grievances be addressed delicately, warning against exploitation of the unrest.

Crackdown and Arrests

Iranian state broadcasters reported the arrests of seven individuals, including those allegedly connected to monarchist and opposition groups abroad. Security forces also seized 100 smuggled firearms in various operations.

To temper protest activity, authorities announced a public holiday due to cold weather, coinciding with Iran’s weekend and additional religious observances.

Political Strains Amid International Scrutiny

The protests unfold amid escalating tensions following a recent 12-day conflict with Israel and U.S. military actions targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. Tehran claims it has halted uranium enrichment, suggesting a willingness to negotiate to ease sanctions.

Nevertheless, talks remain stagnant as warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continue to echo regarding Iran's nuclear objectives.
