Starting October 12, 2025, the European Union (EU) will officially launch its Entry/Exit System (EES) — a new digital border management system designed to make travel smoother and enhance security across the Schengen area. This move marks a major shift from traditional passport stamping to modern biometric verification, transforming how millions of travellers enter and exit Europe.
The EES will apply to all non-EU citizens, including tourists and business visitors, entering the Schengen zone for short stays. The system covers all EU countries except Ireland and Cyprus, and also includes Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
Under this new regulation, travellers entering the Schengen area for the first time will need to register their biometric and personal details — including fingerprints, facial images, and passport information. For children under 12, only a photograph will be required.
This digital record will replace manual passport stamps and link each traveller’s identity to their documents, ensuring a secure and efficient border control process. Once registered, travellers’ future entries will be faster, requiring only facial recognition verification at border checkpoints.
The EU’s Entry/Exit System aims to:
Prevent illegal migration and identity fraud
Track visitors’ 90-day stay limit within any 180-day period
Improve border efficiency and reduce waiting times
Enhance security and monitoring of non-EU travellers
Authorities will be able to quickly identify overstays, streamline entry procedures, and maintain accurate records of who enters and leaves the Schengen area.
The EES will be gradually introduced at airports, seaports, and land borders starting in October 2025, with full implementation expected by April 10, 2026. While minor delays are anticipated during the early phase, officials say the new system will ultimately make border crossings faster, smarter, and safer.
With the rollout of the Entry/Exit System, the EU is taking a major step toward modernizing border control and ensuring a secure yet convenient travel experience. The system aligns with the EU’s broader goal of using advanced digital technologies to strengthen border security while maintaining smooth travel for legitimate visitors.
