A 41-year-old male hiker has died from hypothermia and acute altitude sickness after a severe blizzard hit the Tibetan slopes of Mount Everest, Chinese officials reported. At least 200 other hikers remain stranded following the weekend storm.
Around 350 people caught in the blizzard have already been rescued and safely brought to a designated meeting point in Dingri County, Xigaze City, southwest Tibet. Local authorities have also established contact with over 200 hikers who are making their way to Qudeng Town with assistance from emergency teams.
Heavy snowfall began on Saturday evening, impacting hikers along trails near Qudeng Town. The county government quickly mobilised rescue and emergency teams to coordinate relief efforts and ensure communication with stranded groups.

All hikers who reached Qudeng Town have been provided with meals, medical check-ups, and proper accommodation. Some have already begun their journey home in stable condition.
Eyewitness accounts and videos shared on social media show that climbers faced thunder, strong winds, and deep snow, which buried the trails and made movement extremely difficult. One hiker, speaking through a satellite call, described setting up camp amid heavy snowfall and fearing that the tent might collapse during the night.
Rescue efforts have been supported by local villagers, guides, and yak handlers, who helped clear paths and transport supplies. Some teams relied on yaks to navigate snow-covered routes, ensuring hikers could safely reach safer campsites.
Authorities are continuing their efforts to bring all stranded hikers to safety. The blizzard struck during China’s eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, when thousands of tourists had visited Tibet, increasing the number of people affected by the storm.
