Sister vs. Sister: Ewa Sokola Files Defamation Suit After Weinstein Trial

Sister vs. Sister: Ewa Sokola Files Defamation Suit After Weinstein Trial

Post by : Badri Ariffin

The fallout from the Harvey Weinstein trial has sparked a contentious family feud, with two sisters now embroiled in a legal dispute.

Ewa Sokola, a cardiologist from Wrocław, Poland, has initiated a defamation lawsuit against her younger sister, Kaja Sokola, in a federal court in Manhattan. Filed on Tuesday, the suit contends that Kaja made false public statements that have severely damaged Ewa's professional reputation and medical career.

Context of the Legal Dispute

Kaja Sokola testified about her experiences with Weinstein during his recent criminal trial, alleging sexual assault in 2006. Ewa, called as a witness by the prosecution, inadvertently provided testimony that favored Weinstein’s defense.

After the trial, Kaja criticized Ewa’s statements, claiming they undermined her own allegations and weakened her case. According to legal documents, Kaja characterized Ewa’s actions as a personal betrayal, suggesting Ewa withheld crucial journal entries related to the alleged assault.

Claims in the Defamation Suit

In her lawsuit, Ewa Sokola accuses Kaja's remarks of being libelous, causing her public humiliation and disgrace within the Polish medical community. She states these statements have damaged her professional network in Wrocław, leading to a loss of patient referrals and clinic staff, alongside enduring reputational damage.

The complaint further alleges that Kaja falsely accused Ewa of extreme misconduct, including homicide, theft, and collusion with Weinstein’s defense. Ewa seeks unspecified damages.

Attempted outreach to Kaja Sokola’s legal representatives went unanswered by the time of publication.

Court Verdict and Trial Outcome

This defamation suit follows a split jury verdict delivered in June. While Weinstein was convicted of forcibly performing oral sex on Miriam Haley, he faced acquittal on Kaja's allegations. Both incidents were reported to have occurred in 2006.

The jury could not decide on a third count involving Weinstein’s alleged rape of Jessica Mann, prompting a mistrial declaration. Weinstein’s legal representation has motioned for the conviction to be overturned, claiming jury misconduct, with a decision pending on January 8.

Details Behind the Allegations

In her testimony, Kaja Sokola described how Weinstein allegedly arranged for her to appear as an extra on The Nanny Diaries and later lured both sisters to his hotel room under the guise of discussing a script, where she states the assault occurred shortly before her 20th birthday.

Kaja later accused Ewa of aiding Weinstein’s defense by providing a personal journal detailing previous assaults that did not mention Weinstein, something the defense exploited during the trial.

A Complex Legal and Personal Situation

Once central to a high-profile trial, the sisters' relationship has now devolved into a bitter legal battle. As the Weinstein case continues to unfold, this defamation lawsuit adds another layer of complexity to an already fraught situation.
