Delhi’s air quality has dipped back into hazardous territory, with the AQI climbing well above safe levels. Thick smog is leaving many residents coughing, breathless and drained. Specialists warn the harm extends beyond the lungs: hormone and gut-health expert Tanisha Bawa says polluted air also affects the heart, nervous system and immune response.
Bawa notes that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can pass into the bloodstream and trigger body-wide inflammation. This unseen damage can show up as persistent tiredness, mood shifts and difficulty concentrating. In an Instagram post on November 5, she cautioned that while people cannot become immune to pollution, they can take steps to increase their resilience.
To reduce the toll on the body, Bawa recommends practical measures such as increasing intake of antioxidant-rich foods, staying well hydrated, supporting gut health with fermented foods, and adopting stress-reduction practices. She also advises cutting back outdoor activity during peak pollution and using indoor air purifiers when available.
Medical professionals stress that prolonged exposure to polluted air raises risks of heart disease, asthma, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalances and weakened immunity. Authorities and doctors urge Delhi residents to take precautions like wearing certified pollution masks, avoiding heavy-traffic times and maintaining cleaner indoor spaces to limit dust and smog.
Bawa adds that simple, consistent habits—healthy eating, regular hydration and protecting indoor air—can meaningfully help the body cope with Delhi’s toxic atmosphere. Small, steady changes are key to strengthening overall resilience.
