A tragic fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, Goa, claimed 25 lives, triggered by illegal pyrotechnics and several safety breaches. Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze erupted during a belly dance performance when electrically initiated pyroguns emitted sparks that ignited the highly flammable thatched roof.
The fire rapidly consumed the 300-square-metre space, leaving many attendees trapped as thick smoke engulfed the area. Initial suspicions of a LPG cylinder explosion were dismissed after investigations attributed the ignition to indoor pyrotechnics.
Authorities pointed to multiple serious oversights, including the use of a combustible roof material, improper alcohol storage, and narrow escape routes that hindered fire response. Estimates suggested around 200 people were present during the incident; 20 of the deceased were nightclub employees, while the others were tourists.
Investigators confirmed that the nightclub lacked the proper operating permits. An investigation has begun into the local panchayat officials who granted the 2023 trade license. Both the secretary and sarpanch are now seeking anticipatory bail amid ongoing scrutiny. One official could face arrest if he fails to cooperate.
In a concerning development, Delhi-based entrepreneurs Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, co-promoters of the nightclub, were detained in Thailand after fleeing just hours post-fire. The authorities, responding to a lookout notice issued by India, tracked the brothers down in Phuket. Plans are underway by a joint Goa Police and CBI team to return them to face charges related to culpable homicide. Their attorney claims they were in Thailand for business, but police are unaware of any business interests there.
Already, six individuals, including senior management and co-owner Ajay Gupta, have been arrested in connection with the incident. Gupta, who claims to have been a passive investor, is currently in police custody for a week following his discharge from a Delhi medical facility.
In response to the tragedy, the state government has launched a thorough review of nightlife venues, enforcing inspections across popular areas. Several establishments, including one in Vagator, were closed due to violations. Families of victims will receive ₹5 lakh in financial aid, while the injured will be compensated ₹50,000. A high-ranking investigation panel has been formed to report findings within one week, including members from fire services, forensics, and South Goa administration.
