Devastating Jeep Crash Claims 8 Lives in Nepal's Karnali Province

Devastating Jeep Crash Claims 8 Lives in Nepal's Karnali Province

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A tragic event unfolded in Nepal's Karnali province as a jeep carrying 18 passengers veered off a hillside, plunging nearly 700 feet, resulting in the loss of eight lives and injuries to ten others. This accident took place on Friday night in the Jharmare region of Bafikot, located about 500 km west of Kathmandu, as confirmed by local police on Saturday.

The vehicle was en route from Khalanga in Musikot to the Syalikhadi area within Athbiskot Municipality when it met with this unfortunate fate. Initial investigations indicate that excessive speeding might have contributed to the incident, according to officials.

Reports from the police suggest that seven individuals perished on the spot, while one later succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The deceased, aged between 15 and 30, predominantly comprised young adults, causing added anguish for their families and communities.

The ten individuals who survived the incident are now being treated at the District Hospital in Salle, Rukum. Local government authorities continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the accident, emphasizing the need for adherence to safety protocols on the treacherous roads of Karnali province.

This devastating jeep accident underscores the pressing need for enhanced road safety measures in hilly areas, where the combination of steep landscapes and recklessness can lead to catastrophic events. A cloud of grief now hangs over families and local residents, who mourn the untimely death of young lives.
