Tragic Mountain Lion Attack Takes Life of Colorado Woman

Tragic Mountain Lion Attack Takes Life of Colorado Woman

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Colorado, USA:

A woman lost her life in an unusual suspected mountain lion attack on a well-frequented hiking trail in northern Colorado, which may be the state's first fatality from such an incident in over twenty years.

The event transpired around 12:15 PM on New Year’s Day on the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County, according to officials from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).

Hikers reported sighting a mountain lion near an individual lying lifeless on the ground. Efforts by witnesses to frighten the animal away included throwing rocks, which successfully drove it away into the nearby wilderness.

“One witness, a physician, couldn’t find a pulse,” stated CPW spokeswoman Kara Van Hoose, confirming that the woman was declared dead at the scene.

Emergency Response and Search Operation

In response to the report, a large-scale operation was initiated, including wildlife officials, sheriffs' deputies, park police, and local firefighters. A state wildlife biologist assisting in a regular deer assessment also participated in the aerial search.

Specially trained dogs were deployed to track the mountain lion scent, a highly effective method for locating the animals involved.

Mountain Lions Euthanized

Wildlife officials confirmed that two mountain lions were euthanized during the investigation. One lion was shot at the scene but fled before it could be located and ultimately killed later. Another lion found nearby was euthanized in accordance with state policy, which dictates the removal of wildlife that participates in human attacks for public safety.

Despite the euthanization of two animals, officials indicated that mountain lions are extremely territorial, suggesting that likely only one was responsible for the attack.

Investigation Ongoing

Pathologists plan to conduct necropsies on both animals to investigate for potential neurological diseases such as rabies and to check for human DNA. The county coroner will soon release details about the victim’s identity and establish the precise cause of death.

Rare but Serious Incidents

CPW underscores that mountain lion attacks on humans are exceptionally rare. Since 1990, Colorado has documented only 28 such occurrences, with the last recorded fatality happening in 1999.

Officials noted that mountain lions tend to become more visible during winter as they follow deer and elk to lower elevations in search of food.

Safety Advice for the Public

Authorities advise hikers to stay vigilant and implement safety measures if a mountain lion is encountered. Suggested actions include making loud noises, raising arms or objects overhead to appear larger, maintaining eye contact, and gradually backing away without turning your back.

Mountain Lion Population in Colorado

Colorado is home to an estimated 3,800 to 4,400 mountain lions, excluding young kittens. Classified as big game, this species has increased in numbers since 1965 due to conservation management practices.

Mountain lions boast the widest geographic range of any native mammal in the Americas, extending from western Canada to Argentina. Although they once roamed much of the U.S., they now primarily inhabit western states.

Adult mountain lions can exceed six feet in length, weigh over 130 pounds, and mainly hunt deer using stealth, often launching attacks from trees or rocky surfaces.
