On Tuesday evening, a huge fire broke out in Korail, one of the largest slums in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital city. The fire quickly spread through the tightly packed tin-roofed houses, destroying rows of homes and leaving thousands of people homeless. Korail slum is home to nearly 80,000 people and is located between the rich neighborhoods of Gulshan and Banani, surrounded by tall apartment buildings.
The fire started shortly after sunset. Bright orange flames rose high into the sky, and thick smoke covered the area. People rushed to escape the fire carrying whatever belongings they could save. The fire moved fast because the houses in the slum are very close to each other and made mostly of flammable materials like wood and tin sheets.
Authorities quickly responded and sent 19 fire engines to fight the blaze. However, heavy traffic delayed their arrival. When firefighters reached Korail, the narrow and crowded lanes made it impossible to bring the fire engines close to the fire. So, firefighters had to carry long hoses and walk through small alleys to reach the burning houses. The team worked hard for more than five hours to control and finally stop the fire.
No deaths or injuries were immediately reported, but the damage to the homes was nearly total. Many families lost everything they owned. Amena Begum, a resident whose home was destroyed, said with tears, “Everything I had is gone. How will I survive now?” The fire left many people without shelter, food, or basic necessities, creating a serious humanitarian crisis.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, and officials are investigating to find out what started the blaze. Fires like this are unfortunately common in Bangladesh’s slums and crowded areas. Experts often blame weak safety rules and poor enforcement of fire prevention laws. Many such fires have caused death and destruction in the past few years.
Local authorities are under pressure to improve safety and emergency services in the slums to prevent future disasters. The government and humanitarian organizations are expected to provide emergency aid to the affected families, including food, shelter, and medical care.
Korail slum, despite being surrounded by some of Dhaka’s wealthiest areas, faces many challenges including poor living conditions, overcrowding, and lack of basic services. This fire has once again highlighted the urgent need for better housing, fire safety measures, and disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities.
