Florida Bishops Urge Immigration Arrest Halt During Christmas

Florida Bishops Urge Immigration Arrest Halt During Christmas

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a heartfelt plea, Florida's Catholic bishops have asked President Trump to suspend immigration enforcement over the Christmas season, highlighting humanitarian issues and widespread fear within immigrant families. The White House has responded by affirming that operations will continue as usual.

The appeal, led by Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami and endorsed by seven other members of the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops, acknowledged the administration’s focus on border security but criticized the impact of current tactics on non-criminal immigrants.

Wenski noted, “Much of the critical work of addressing dangerous criminals has already been accomplished,” stressing that generalized enforcement actions are now affecting individuals merely trying to work and support their families.

The bishops warned that this aggressive enforcement has fostered anxiety not only among undocumented individuals but also among lawful residents, their families, and entire communities. Wenski pointed out that the atmosphere of fear is disrupting family structures, employment, and community ties across Florida.

They urged the federal government to halt arrests and sweep operations during the festive period. Wenski emphasized, “A pause would reflect a decent regard for the humanity of these families,” illustrating the belief that policies should be framed by both legal and moral obligations.

The response from the White House was dismissive, with spokesperson Abigail Jackson affirming, “President Trump was elected on his promise to remove criminal illegal aliens, and he is upholding that commitment,” while not addressing the holiday pause request.

Archbishop Wenski has been a longstanding advocate for compassionate immigration reforms. Earlier this year, he joined fellow leaders at Georgetown University to criticize stringent immigration policies, pointing to their effects on family separation and community cohesion.

Wenski also underscored the essential role immigrants fulfill within various sectors of the U.S. economy, stating, “Some of the most reliable and dedicated workers are immigrants.” He argued that while enforcement remains vital, it should be executed reasonably and compassionately.

In his outreach efforts, Wenski has engaged in the “Knights on Bikes” ministry by the Knights of Columbus, focusing on the spiritual needs of individuals in immigration detention. He shared experiences praying outside a remote facility in the Florida Everglades and later celebrating Mass inside.

“Encouraging detainees to pray, even in difficult circumstances, affirms their dignity,” stated Wenski.

Despite the bishops’ heartfelt request, federal officials have indicated that there will be no policy changes, highlighting the ongoing conflict between immigration enforcement priorities and calls for empathy during the holiday season.
