The world of Indian classical and folk music is mourning the loss of Assam’s iconic flute maestro, Dipak Sarma, who passed away in Chennai early on Monday morning after a prolonged illness. His death marks the end of a remarkable musical journey that beautifully bridged traditional Assamese sounds with Indian classical music.
Born in Panigaon village in Nalbari district, Assam, Dipak Sarma rose from humble beginnings to become one of the state’s most respected flutists. His mastery of the flute and deep understanding of rhythm and melody made him a cultural ambassador of Assam’s musical heritage.
Sarma had been unwell for several months and was undergoing treatment in Guwahati before being shifted to Chennai for advanced medical care. Despite the efforts of doctors, the acclaimed musician breathed his last on Monday morning.
In recent weeks, reports revealed that the artist had been facing severe financial challenges during his illness. The Assam Chief Minister had extended support of ₹5 lakh to assist with his medical expenses. The gesture highlighted the respect and recognition he commanded in the state’s cultural fraternity.
Tributes have poured in from across Assam and the Indian music community, remembering him not only for his mesmerizing flute performances but also for his humility and dedication to the art form. Artists, cultural organizations, and fans alike have expressed deep grief at the loss of one of Assam’s finest musicians.
Dipak Sarma’s contribution to Indian music remains timeless. His artistry transcended borders, inspiring generations of musicians to embrace the richness of Assamese folk traditions while exploring classical forms. His legacy continues to echo through the haunting, soulful notes of his flute.
