Fredericton to Introduce Red-Light Cameras for Enhanced Road Safety

Fredericton to Introduce Red-Light Cameras for Enhanced Road Safety

Post by : Meena Ariff

Fredericton is set to implement a pilot program featuring red-light cameras at four critical intersections in an effort to improve road safety. This initiative follows the recent provincial legislation permitting municipalities to embrace automated traffic enforcement, which includes red-light and speed cameras.

Officials point out that these intersections pose significant risks for T-bone collisions due to red-light violations and speeding. The targeted locations are Regent Street at Wayne Squibb Boulevard, Smythe and Prospect streets, Queen and Westmorland streets, as well as the intersection of Ring Road and Maple Street. Camera placements may be reassessed after a year based on collision statistics.

Red-light cameras document vehicles ignoring traffic signals, with law enforcement reviewing infractions prior to issuing tickets to registered vehicle owners. Studies indicate a reduction in fatal accidents at signalized intersections by as much as 21% due to these devices.

Local resident Jeff Jardine, who suffered injuries from a red-light incident in 2016, supports the initiative, stating, “If it helps prevent serious accidents, red-light cameras are worthwhile.”

Although installation costs can exceed $100,000 per camera, coupled with annual maintenance, city officials are considering various funding options and revenue-sharing models to ensure the program's sustainability.

The city is currently evaluating proposals and plans to unveil detailed information once the pilot project is confirmed.
