Nearly 300 firefighters were on the scene Friday to battle a large fire that broke out in Guryong Village, a low-income area within Seoul’s upscale Gangnam district.
Authorities reported that no casualties have been recorded. However, 47 residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Around 110 people live in the part of the village affected by the fire.
Fire crews worked throughout the day to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the extent of the damage to buildings in the village.
Guryong Village, located in one of Seoul’s wealthiest districts, is home to a low-income population living in tightly packed housing. Its narrow streets and dense structures make firefighting operations especially challenging.
Emergency teams remain on-site to fully extinguish any remaining flames and ensure the area is safe. Evacuated residents are receiving temporary shelter and support until it is safe to return to their homes.
The incident highlights the unique challenges of protecting vulnerable communities living within major urban centers, even in the midst of affluent neighborhoods.
