Global Aid Cuts Spark Alarming Rise in Child Mortality

Global Aid Cuts Spark Alarming Rise in Child Mortality

Post by : Badri Ariffin

A critical blow to global child health is expected as reductions in international aid are likely to result in approximately 200,000 more children under five dying this year compared to 2024. As reported by the Gates Foundation, this could signify the first increase in preventable child fatalities this century.

Over the last twenty years, child mortality has improved significantly, falling from 9 million deaths in 2000 to around 4.6 million in 2024. However, these delicate advancements are now at risk. The latest Goalkeepers report from the foundation indicates that without renewed global support, child deaths could surge to 4.8 million this year.

This decline in funding isn’t isolated; it began with cuts in U.S. aid earlier this year and has now impacted other key contributors, such as Britain and Germany. Overall, global health development aid has decreased by nearly 27% compared to last year, putting already at-risk health systems under immense stress.

The repercussions of these funding cuts are aggravated by rising national debts and the fragile healthcare frameworks in many low- and middle-income nations. Experts warn that without a restoration of aid, as many as 16 million additional children could perish before 2045, highlighting the deep long-term consequences of this aid shortfall.

Experts advocate for a mix of innovative strategies and time-tested methods, including vaccination initiatives, increased healthcare access, and investments in primary health, to reverse this detrimental trend. The next few months will be pivotal in determining the future of child survival gains achieved over decades.
