Online fashion shopping often falls short: sizes can mislead, photos may lie, and buyers return nearly 30% of apparel purchases. That’s why Google’s latest tool, Doppl, is a timely leap forward. Released on June 27, 2025, via Google Labs, Doppl combines innovative AI with fashion—giving you the power to virtually try on clothes using your own photo, bringing personalized style decisions directly to your phone.
Doppl empowers users to:
Upload a full-body photo or select a generic AI model profile.
Snap or upload an outfit image found online—from Instagram to thrift-shop listings.
Generate a realistic image—and short video—of yourself in that outfit, complete with motion to simulate how it drapes and moves.
This concept builds on existing virtual try-on features in Google Search but takes it further. Doppl offers animated previews of your customized looks, transforming a static image into something that captures fit, volume, and style in motion.
Journalists and testers have welcomed Doppl’s realism and convenience. One tester from Tom's Guide noted being “obsessed” after seeing herself animated in orange pants—though recognizing occasional glitches like floating feet or awkward draping .
The Verge’s hands-on review commented that while tops often appear accurate, pants can render oddly—sometimes redrawing shorts as tights or distorting ankles. The app also “AI‑generated feet” when socks weren’t included, and could slightly slim body shapes in selfies.
Still, users see Doppl’s potential. It’s a fun and functional tool for visualizing new styles, sharing looks, and reducing needless returns. And since it currently supports only tops, shorts, jeans, and dresses, with no shoes or lingerie yet, its developers are clear this is early-stage innovation.
Download the app (U.S. Apple App Store or Google Play), sign in with your Google account.
Choose your avatar: Upload your full-body photo or use built-in models.
Upload an outfit image: Screenshot of a dress, top, trousers—you name it.
Generate & animate: Doppl builds the composite and animates a short clip.
Review, share, refine: Save or share looks, delete what doesn’t fit, give feedback directly within the app.
Tips for best results: choose well-lit, full-frame photos, wear neutral skin-fitting clothes, and pick outfit images that clearly show the full garment—no hidden details.
Doppl represents a major step forward in personalized shopping, addressing key pain points. Traditional fashion try-on tools rely on standard models or body scans; Doppl injects realism and user identity, offering a closer representation of how garments will actually look and flow.
This aligns with Google’s broader AI Strategy. At I/O 2025, the company also announced expanded “Try It On” features, price tracking, and direct checkout options via AI Mode in Search. Doppl acts as a mobile playback—an experimental but powerful way to explore outfit options, refine decisions, and reduce returns.
It’s also shaping a new kind of fashion feedback loop: users can share their AI-generated looks on social media or get instant opinions from friends—all before committing to a purchase.
Google says Doppl embeds invisible digital watermarks for content tracking, and respects user consent—only people over 18 in the U.S. with Google accounts can access it. Uploaded photos are kept for up to three months, and users must actively provide feedback if they encounter sensitive content or errors.
There are concerns about body image distortion, as the algorithm may slim users in mirror selfies. Google acknowledges imperfections and encourages user feedback to improve body rendering, clothing details, and modeling realism.
As an app in trial, Doppl’s future looks talented. Google programmers plan:
Adding shoes, accessories, and more garment types
Expanding availability beyond the U.S.
Integrating with Google Shopping and its 50-billion-product index to allow in-app purchase options directly from the generated look.
Improving movement fidelity and styling nuances via Apple M4 or Snapdragon-level processing.
Doppl isn’t perfect—but it’s a leap forward in consumer-facing AI. By giving us animated virtual fits based on our actual bodies and style sources, it brings online shopping one step closer to real life. Whether deciding on a new wardrobe, reducing wrong-size returns, or just having fun with fashion, Doppl puts you in the driver's seat of style.
