Korea and the United States are reporting conflicting accounts regarding communication about a recent U.S. air exercise in the West Sea. The disagreement focuses on whether Seoul received advance notice and whether the top U.S. commander apologized.
The drill, held on February 18-19 from Osan Air Base, involved over 100 sorties by U.S. fighter jets. Chinese warplanes responded, leading to a brief standoff.South Korea’s Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff protested that details were not shared in advance. USFK stated that notification had been provided and expressed regret for any briefing delays.
The lack of clarity over which Korean officials were notified has drawn attention, as such operations are usually coordinated with the South Korean Air Force. Officials did not comment on whether prior notice was received.USFK also denied issuing an apology, stating that regular training is essential to maintain readiness. Phone calls between officials took place, but details were not disclosed. The exercise was halted earlier than scheduled following the calls.
This incident highlights tensions and communication gaps between U.S. forces and Korean authorities during sensitive military operations in the region.
