Malaysia moves to protect Musang King durian amid China impostors

Malaysia moves to protect Musang King durian amid China impostors

Post by : Shakul

The Malaysian government is taking action to protect the Musang King durian brand amid reports that durians from Thailand and Vietnam are being falsely marketed as Musang King in China.

Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said Malaysia has secured a geographical indication (GI) registration for Musang King, giving the country exclusive rights to the name. This ensures that durians grown elsewhere cannot legally be sold under the Musang King label, even if they have similar shapes.

The ministry is working closely with General Administration of Customs China (GACC) to ensure proper recognition and protection of authentic Malaysian Musang King exports. The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) is also strengthening branding efforts through the MyBest certification label, which helps consumers identify genuine Malaysian products.

Mohamad Sabu emphasized that Malaysian-grown Musang King has a unique taste and quality that cannot be replicated elsewhere. Enforcement agencies like the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (MAQIS) will engage in technical discussions with Chinese regulators to prevent mislabelling.

Protecting Musang King is crucial as durian exports to China have become a high-value industry and an important source of income for Malaysian farmers. The government reiterated its commitment to defending Musang King as Malaysia’s exclusive brand, ensuring both the livelihood of farmers and the integrity of the export market.
