Hadramout's Strategy: Peaceful Reclamation of Military Sites As Tensions Rise

Hadramout's Strategy: Peaceful Reclamation of Military Sites As Tensions Rise

Post by : Saif Rahman

The ongoing crisis in Yemen took a dramatic turn on Friday as Hadramout province's governor unveiled intentions for a “peaceful operation” aimed at reclaiming military assets from opposing factions. This initiative underscores the increasing tensions within Yemen and the growing rift between its prominent regional supporters, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Governor Salem Ahmed Saeed al-Khunbashi, who is aligned with Saudi Arabia, clarified that the operation will target only military locations and should not be interpreted as an act of war. His remarks follow the internationally recognized Yemeni government granting him comprehensive authority over military, security, and administrative aspects in the province. Officials indicate that the primary goal is to restore order and stability.

The operation specifically targets the forces loyal to the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a UAE-supported faction advocating for southern independence. The STC has recently seized significant portions of southern Yemen, including strategic military zones, which Saudi Arabia perceives as a direct threat to Yemen’s unity and its influence therein.

This development signals a deeper issue. Once allies, Saudi Arabia and the UAE's partnership in Yemen has frayed, as both nations now endorse conflicting sides. This dispute has become increasingly apparent since December. Just last week, the UAE announced plans to withdraw its remaining troops from Yemen, responding to Saudi-led calls for their exit.

The STC has yet to publicly react to the governor's announcement. Nevertheless, the existing tensions have already disrupted daily life. Flight operations at Aden International Airport came to a halt following a dispute involving Saudi Arabia and the STC. Saudi representatives reported that a plane carrying a Saudi delegation was denied landing permission, while STC-controlled transport authorities accused Saudi Arabia of obstructing flights with additional checks.

Aden airport serves as a crucial connection for areas in Yemen not under Houthi control. The closure raises alarms about travel limitations, aid access, and the overall connectivity for millions of Yemenis.

Yemen has endured years of conflict, famine, and fragmentation. Many citizens express concerns that emerging power struggles, even when labeled as “peaceful,” might usher in greater instability. As regional powers vie for dominance, it’s the ordinary populace that bears the brunt.

The upcoming days will be pivotal in determining if dialogue can soothe the current upheaval or if Yemen's delicate peace will encounter another grave challenge.
