A 50-year-old Hindu man named Khokon Das was violently attacked and set on fire on December 31 in Bangladesh’s Shariatpur district. The assault reportedly occurred while he was on his way home. A mob wielding sharp weapons brutally beat him before setting him ablaze. Khokon’s case is the latest in a series of violent attacks targeting Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.
This marks the fourth such attack on Hindus in recent weeks. On December 24, 29-year-old Amrit Mondal was lynched by a mob in the Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union. Earlier, on December 18, a 25-year-old Hindu youth named Dipu Chandra Das was brutally murdered in Bhaluka Upazila, Mymensingh. Das was accused falsely of blasphemy by a Muslim coworker and was attacked by a mob who killed him, hung his body from a tree, and set it on fire.
These incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh. Violence against Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and other minorities has increased significantly, especially during the current Yunus-led interim government. The attacks have drawn condemnation from human rights groups globally.
India has recently expressed deep concern over the continuous hostility towards minorities in Bangladesh and is closely monitoring the situation to ensure regional peace and security. The rise in violence has sparked outrage both locally and internationally, highlighting the urgent need for protective measures for vulnerable communities.
