Hong Kong's retail sector maintained its recovery in June 2026, with retail sales increasing for the 14th consecutive month. Government figures released on Tuesday showed that the total value of retail sales climbed 4.6% year-on-year to HK$31.5 billion (US$4.02 billion), reflecting steady consumer demand and stronger tourism activity. Although the growth rate eased from the 7.9% increase recorded in May, the latest figures indicate that the retail industry continues to benefit from improving economic conditions and rising visitor numbers.
In terms of sales volume, retail activity expanded by 2.3% compared with June last year, following a revised 4.8% increase in May. Government officials noted that retail growth remained broad-based, with several major product categories recording positive performance during the month. The data suggests that consumer confidence and spending have continued to improve despite global economic uncertainties.
During the first six months of 2026, Hong Kong's retail sector recorded solid overall growth. The total value of retail sales increased by 9.6% compared with the same period last year, while overall retail sales volume rose 7.2%, highlighting sustained improvement across the industry.
According to the Hong Kong government, continued economic expansion, rising household incomes, and increasing inbound tourism are expected to remain key drivers of retail activity. However, officials also cautioned that global economic developments could still affect local consumer spending, and authorities will continue monitoring market conditions closely. Data from the Hong Kong Tourism Board showed that total visitor arrivals reached 3.72 million in June, representing a 6.9% year-on-year increase. Visitors from mainland China recorded even stronger growth, rising 10.5% to approximately 2.88 million, providing significant support to shopping, dining, and tourism-related businesses.
Among the strongest-performing retail segments, sales of jewellery, watches, clocks, and valuable gifts increased 20.1% compared with the previous year, following revised growth of 26% in May. Meanwhile, sales of motor vehicles and automotive parts declined 4.3% year-on-year, reversing the revised 1.8% growth reported in May. The clothing, footwear, and related products category posted modest growth of 0.5%, following an upwardly revised 2.6% increase in the previous month.

The latest figures suggest that Hong Kong's retail industry continues to recover steadily, supported by improving tourism, higher disposable incomes, and stronger domestic economic activity. While external economic risks remain, continued growth in visitor arrivals is expected to provide ongoing support for the retail sector in the coming months.
