A Minnesota man says he felt frightened, embarrassed, and helpless after immigration officers stormed into his home with guns drawn, handcuffed him, and forced him outside into the snow wearing only shorts and Crocs.
The man, ChongLy Thao, 56, who also goes by Scott, is a naturalized U.S. citizen. He moved to the United States from Laos as a child and became a citizen many years ago.
The incident took place Sunday evening, during a raid in Thao’s neighborhood. He said he was at home when officers broke down his front door. Thao tried to grab his identification, but he was not allowed to put on proper clothing before being taken outside.
In the freezing cold, Thao wrapped himself in a blanket that belonged to his grandson, but the exposure and handcuffs made the situation extremely difficult. Photos of the scene quickly circulated online, prompting a wave of public concern and discussion.
Thao described the ordeal as scary and humiliating. He said he feared for his safety and could not understand why he was targeted. “I kept asking myself, ‘Why me?’” he said. He also worried about the possibility of being sent back to Laos, where he has no family remaining.
After a short detention, Thao was returned to his home the same day. He said no explanation or apology was offered by the officers.
Authorities said the raid was part of a broader operation aimed at finding convicted offenders. Thao was briefly held because he did not comply immediately with identification procedures.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern in the community, especially among civil rights advocates. Many criticized the raid as harsh and unnecessary, pointing out that U.S. citizens should not face such treatment.
Thao’s family called the experience deeply traumatizing and embarrassing, and the story has raised important questions about the rights of citizens during immigration enforcement operations.
The case has become a topic of discussion nationwide, highlighting the need for careful enforcement and respect for civil liberties, even during immigration operations.
