9th Desert Theatre Festival in Sharjah Gets Underway

9th Desert Theatre Festival in Sharjah Gets Underway

Post by : Maya Rahman

On Friday, H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the ninth edition of the Sharjah Desert Theatre Festival. Present at the ceremony was H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. This festival, which runs until December 17, aims to honor Arab desert culture and traditions via theatrical performances.

The festival's opening event included a presentation of a play penned by Sheikh Dr. Sultan, titled “Al Barraq and Layla Al Afeefa”, staged in Al Kehaif. Sheikh Dr. Sultan commended the performers for their captivating delivery, enriching poetic dialogue, and innovative staging techniques integrating cinematic aspects with natural portrayals of animals like horses and camels. He acknowledged the efforts of director Mohammed Al Ameri and lauded the seamless blend of filmed scenes and live action, reflecting the production's artistic excellence.

The Ruler shared that the play symbolizes the UAE and stands up against submissions from other Arab nations, asserting that any accolades would reflect the UAE’s reputation, rather than just personal or local glory. Recalling his theatrical journey, Sheikh Dr. Sultan mentioned directing a well-received play in 1954, urging contemporary artists to prioritize substantial content that elevates theatre beyond lighthearted entertainment.

Additionally, the festival showcased various folk performances and segments celebrating traditional Arab heritage. Sheikh Dr. Sultan highlighted the necessity of nurturing young talent through establishments like the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy, which trains and mentors aspiring artists in their theatrical pursuits. He insisted that theatre should cultivate an inclusive culture, steering clear of limited regionalism and promoting creativity and national pride.

The play itself portrays significant moments from Arab poetry, weaving themes of bravery, loyalty, and love for one's homeland into a vivid tapestry of expression. It successfully amalgamated stunning visual elements with powerful acting, captivating audiences throughout. The production featured renowned actors from Sharjah and the broader Arab world, such as Ahmed Al Jasmi, Basel Yakhour, Ibrahim Salem, Abdullah Masoud, and Azza Zarour.

This edition, themed “Desert Theatre and the Aesthetics of Arab Folk Narratives”, seeks to explore the creative potential presented by Arab folk tales, expanding both the artistic scope and technical skills within desert theatre. The festival will conclude on December 17, celebrating the rich heritage and innovation in Arab theatre.
