The Indian Women's Hockey Team delivered a remarkable performance to defeat hosts New Zealand 2-0 in the final of the FIH Women's Nations Cup 2026 in Auckland. The victory earned India their second Nations Cup title and secured a place in the prestigious FIH Women's Pro League next season.
India entered the final with confidence after an unbeaten run throughout the tournament. The team displayed excellent teamwork, attacking intent and defensive discipline to overcome the hosts in front of their home crowd.
Fast Start Gives India Early Advantage
India made an impressive start to the contest and took the lead in just the fourth minute. Navneet Kaur converted a penalty corner with a powerful strike, giving India an early breakthrough and putting pressure on New Zealand.
The Indian side continued to attack aggressively and maintained control during crucial phases of the opening quarter. Their high-energy approach created several opportunities against the New Zealand defense.
Sunelita Doubles The Lead
India extended their advantage in the 15th minute through Sunelita Toppo. The goal came from a well-worked penalty corner routine as Sunelita expertly deflected Deepika's attempt into the net.

The second goal provided India with a comfortable cushion and boosted the team's confidence. New Zealand tried to respond but struggled to break through India's organized defensive setup.
Strong Defensive Display
After taking a two-goal lead, India focused on maintaining defensive discipline. Captain Savita and the backline produced an outstanding performance, denying the hosts any clear scoring opportunities throughout the match.
New Zealand enjoyed possession in phases but found it difficult to penetrate India's defensive structure. The Indian players remained composed under pressure and successfully protected their lead.
Unbeaten Campaign Ends In Glory
India's title-winning journey was impressive from start to finish. They defeated the United States 3-2, Japan 2-1 and Uruguay 3-2 during the group stage before registering a dominant 6-0 victory over Chile in the semi-final.
The team remained unbeaten throughout the competition and showcased consistent performances against every opponent they faced.
Individual Awards And Recognition
Lalremsiami was named Player of the Match for her outstanding contribution in the final. Deepika finished as the joint-highest scorer of the tournament with six goals, sharing the honor with USA forward Ashley Sessa.
To celebrate the achievement, Hockey India announced a cash reward of ₹3 lakh for each player and ₹1.5 lakh for every member of the support staff.
Major Boost For Indian Hockey
The Nations Cup triumph marks another important milestone for Indian women's hockey. Returning to the FIH Pro League will provide the team with valuable opportunities to compete regularly against the world's top-ranked sides.
The victory also reflects the steady growth of Indian women's hockey and strengthens the team's preparations for future international tournaments.
