An Indian woman was found dead in the United States, triggering a homicide investigation and close coordination between authorities in both countries. Officials at the Indian Embassy in Washington said they are in regular contact with the victim’s family and are extending complete consular assistance.
The deceased, Nikitha Godishala, was 27 years old and lived in Columbia, Maryland. Police said she was reported missing earlier in the week. Following a search, her body was discovered inside the apartment where she had been staying.
Investigators said Nikitha had moved from India to the US for higher studies and later began her professional career there. Members of the Indian community and her friends remembered her as a determined and independent young woman focused on her future.
Law enforcement officials have named her former boyfriend as the main suspect. According to police, the suspect allegedly reported her disappearance and left the country soon after. Arrest warrants have been issued against him, with charges including first-degree and second-degree murder.
Authorities in the United States are now working with federal agencies to locate the suspect and decide the next course of legal action, including possible international cooperation. Officials said the investigation remains active and more information will be released in line with legal procedures.
The Indian Embassy confirmed it is helping the family with paperwork, coordination with local officials, and other required processes. Embassy officials added that they are closely tracking developments in the case and remain engaged with relevant agencies.
The incident has deeply affected the Indian diaspora in the area, with many expressing grief and calling for swift justice. The Embassy has also urged Indian citizens living in the US to stay cautious and reach out to consular services during emergencies.
Meanwhile, Nikitha’s family has requested privacy as the investigation and legal proceedings continue. Officials stressed that coordination between Indian and American authorities will remain essential as the case progresses across jurisdictions.
