In light of the devastating floods in Sumatra, Indonesia is entering a mourning phase. As a mark of respect, various regions, including Jakarta and Bali, have chosen to cancel their New Year fireworks celebrations this week.
The catastrophic floods and landslides that struck North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh provinces have resulted in the loss of over 1,100 lives and forced around 400,000 people from their homes. Complete villages have been engulfed, prompting authorities to ramp up efforts toward rebuilding essential structures like homes and bridges. The recovery cost is estimated to reach at least $3.11 billion, according to official reports.
Prasetyo Hadi, spokesperson for President Prabowo Subianto’s office, indicated that the central government fully backs the decision by regional authorities to skip fireworks. He stated that this action demonstrates national empathy and solidarity with those affected: “It is correct because we have to show empathy and solidarity ... as a nation, that there are some who suffered from a disaster,” he relayed to the press.
Authorities in Denpasar, Bali, have formally banned fireworks, and the government of Jakarta has similarly outlawed display activities in the capital. Residents are encouraged to refrain from igniting any fireworks in a gesture of silence and respect for the victims.
Numerous regions in Sumatra continue to face a state of emergency, as local and national agencies collaborate on rescue and relief operations. More than 20 villages have been completely wiped off the map by the floods, leaving thousands in urgent need of shelter, food, and medical aid.
The focus remains on rebuilding critical infrastructure like homes, roads, and bridges, while efforts are made to distribute aid to displaced families and restore normalcy in affected areas.
By canceling the festivities, Indonesia seeks to honor the lives lost in this tragedy and redirect resources toward recovery efforts. This decision has garnered widespread support as a reflection of the nation's unity and compassion during these challenging times.
