Seven dead, 150 hospitalized after contaminated water in Indore

Seven dead, 150 hospitalized after contaminated water in Indore

Post by : Meena Ariff

Seven people have tragically died, and nearly 150 others have been hospitalized in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, after consuming contaminated water over the past few days. The local government has responded with emergency measures amid growing criticism regarding the water contamination and its deadly consequences.

The source of the contamination was identified as a leak in the main water pipeline located beneath a toilet in the Bhagirathpur area. This leak allowed dirty water from the sewage system to mix with the city’s drinking water supply, causing a serious health crisis among residents. People reported symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration after drinking the polluted water.

Indore’s mayor, Pushyamitra Bhargava, confirmed that since December, seven people have died due to illnesses linked to the contaminated water. While the health department officially reported three deaths, four additional patients who were admitted to hospitals also succumbed to the disease. The District Magistrate, Shivam Verma, verified that four deaths were confirmed by doctors due to this outbreak. So far, 149 patients have been admitted across 27 different hospitals in the city for treatment.

Following complaints from local residents about an unusual foul smell in their tap water, which started becoming worse around December 25, authorities began investigating. Local councillor Kamal Baghela mentioned that residents had been facing water issues for days, but the contamination worsened significantly on Christmas day.

A survey conducted by the health department covered 2,703 households and screened approximately 12,000 people to understand the outbreak’s scale. These efforts were aimed at containing the spread and providing immediate medical assistance to those affected.

In response to the incident, strict action has been taken against officials responsible for the water supply maintenance. Shaligram Shitole, the zonal officer, and Yogesh Joshi, an assistant engineer in charge, have been suspended pending inquiry. Additionally, deputy engineer Shubham Srivastava has been dismissed from his position. A three-member committee led by IAS officer Navjeevan Panwar has been formed to investigate the causes and assign further responsibility.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited several hospitals in Indore to check on the condition of the patients and described the situation as “emergency-like.” He assured that the government is coordinating all efforts to provide timely and effective treatment to those affected. CM Yadav also promised the strictest action against anyone found responsible for this negligence.

To support the families of the victims, the government announced a compensation of two lakh rupees for each deceased individual. Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has ordered the state government to provide free treatment to those suffering from similar symptoms after consuming contaminated water. The court has also asked the government to submit a status report on the situation by January 2, following a public interest litigation filed on this matter.

As the investigation and relief efforts continue, residents of Indore remain cautious and hopeful that the water supply will be restored to safe standards quickly. The incident highlights the urgent need for better infrastructure and monitoring of water safety to prevent such tragedies in the future.
