In a case that has drawn international attention, Iran executed a woman in the country’s northwest for the murder of her four-year-old stepdaughter, authorities confirmed on Saturday. The young child, identified as Ava, died in December 2023 from severe brain injuries caused by wounds inflicted by her stepmother, according to reports from Mizan Online, the judiciary’s official news outlet.
Following a full legal process, the woman was sentenced in March 2024 under qisas, the Islamic law of retribution, which allows the victim’s family to demand the death penalty. The sentence was subsequently upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court. Naser Atabati, chief justice of West Azerbaijan province, where the crime occurred, stated that the execution was carried out at dawn, and emphasized that Ava’s mother had firmly demanded retribution. The executed woman’s identity was not disclosed by authorities.
Iran continues to enforce the death penalty for a range of crimes, including murder and rape, typically carrying out executions by hanging at dawn. The country remains the world’s second most prolific executor after China, according to human rights organizations including Amnesty International.
The case has sparked renewed discussions about Iran’s use of capital punishment, particularly in instances involving family members, and highlights ongoing debates over the application of qisas in the Iranian judicial system. Critics argue that such sentences raise human rights concerns, while supporters insist they serve justice and uphold the law.
This execution adds to a series of high-profile capital cases in Iran, underlining the nation’s strict stance on violent crimes and the continuing role of the death penalty within its legal framework.
