Israel and Hamas have begun indirect talks in Egypt aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza, following support from U.S. President Donald Trump for a peace plan. The discussions, taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh, are focused on implementing the first phase of Trump’s plan, which includes a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
The ongoing war, now marking two years since it began on October 7, 2023, has caused significant loss of life and destruction. Hamas militants attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251. The conflict has left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead and devastated the Gaza Strip.
The U.S. delegation is led by envoy Steve Witkoff, joined by Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. Hamas’ negotiating team is headed by Khalil al-Hayya, while Israel’s delegation includes top negotiator Ron Dermer and foreign policy adviser Ophir Falk. Talks are expected to last only a few days, though Hamas officials say locating hostages’ bodies may require more time.

Under the proposed plan, all hostages held by Hamas would be released within 72 hours, while Israel would free 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 people detained since the war began. Israeli troops would withdraw from Gaza once Hamas disarms, and an international security force would oversee the territory. An interim administration of Palestinian technocrats would manage daily affairs, with Hamas barred from governance. Military infrastructure, including tunnels, would be dismantled, and members pledging peaceful conduct would receive amnesty. Humanitarian aid would be allowed under international supervision.
Despite these steps, several key issues remain unresolved. Hamas has not officially agreed to disarm, a major Israeli demand, and the group has expressed opposition to foreign administration of Gaza. The future of the territory, including whether Israel would maintain a security perimeter, is still unclear. The plan also outlines potential conditions for Palestinian self-determination and statehood, depending on reforms and redevelopment.
As the conflict reaches its two-year mark, the world watches closely, hoping these talks may finally bring an end to one of the region’s deadliest and most protracted conflicts.
