Israeli authorities have arrested former military prosecutor Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, following her admission to leaking a video that allegedly showed Israeli soldiers abusing a Palestinian detainee. The arrest has reignited tensions and international scrutiny over human rights violations in Israeli detention facilities.
Tomer-Yerushalmi, who recently resigned from her post, was detained after disappearing for several hours on Sunday, sparking concerns of a possible suicide attempt. Her resignation letter, published by Israeli media, confirmed that her office was responsible for releasing the footage to the press last year — a leak that triggered public outrage and led to formal charges against five reservists.
The footage, recorded at the Sde Teiman military base in southern Israel, appeared to show soldiers engaging in violent acts against a blindfolded and handcuffed detainee. Although the explicit moment of abuse was obscured, investigators confirmed that the soldiers had stabbed the detainee near the rectum using a sharp object, causing severe injuries including cracked ribs, a punctured lung, and internal tears.
Following the incident, the Israeli military charged the five soldiers with “acting against the detainee with severe violence.” The case brought international condemnation, with protests erupting both in Israel and abroad.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir stated that Tomer-Yerushalmi’s arrest was carried out with “extra vigilance to ensure her safety,” while also emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to “uncover the full truth.” However, police sources suggested she may have faked her disappearance to dispose of her phone, which could contain critical information related to the case.
The United Nations had already raised alarm over the treatment of detainees in Israeli military camps. In October 2024, a UN commission report found that thousands of Palestinian prisoners were subjected to “widespread and systematic abuse” — acts it said amounted to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Israel dismissed the report as “outrageous,” maintaining that it remains committed to international standards for detainee treatment.
The ongoing investigation into Tomer-Yerushalmi’s actions has deepened the political and ethical debate surrounding Israel’s military detention practices, raising difficult questions about transparency, accountability, and justice in conflict zones.
