Rome: Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has ordered a navy frigate to assist a Gaza-bound flotilla after organisers reported that several of their boats were targeted by drones off the coast of Greece.

Speaking about the decision, Crosetto said, “To ensure assistance to the Italian citizens on the flotilla, I spoke with the Prime Minister and authorised the immediate intervention of the Italian Navy’s multi-purpose frigate Fasan, which was sailing north of Crete as part of Operation Safe Sea.”

The frigate is already on its way to the area to provide rescue operations if needed. The Italian government stressed that the move aims to protect its citizens and ensure their safety amid increasing tensions in the region.

This development comes as the flotilla seeks to deliver aid to Gaza, and organisers have warned of potential threats from drone attacks in the Mediterranean. The Italian Navy’s rapid deployment reflects growing concerns about maritime safety for humanitarian missions.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, coordinating with international partners to prevent further incidents and ensure that the flotilla reaches its destination safely.
