Ladakh Protests Turn Violent Amid Shutdown for Statehood Demand

Ladakh Protests Turn Violent Amid Shutdown for Statehood Demand

Post by : Rameen Ariff

On September 24, 2025, violent protests broke out in Leh, Ladakh, as youth groups called for a shutdown to press the Centre for advancing talks regarding the extension of the Sixth Schedule and statehood for Ladakh. The unrest led to the burning of a BJP office and a police vehicle, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders to prevent further violence.

The protests were triggered by the hospitalization of two elderly individuals who had been on a 35-day hunger strike since September 10, led by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. Their deteriorating health condition on September 23 intensified the situation, leading to widespread demonstrations.

As the protests escalated, demonstrators clashed with police, pelting stones and setting fire to a BJP office and a police vehicle. Authorities responded by firing teargas shells and using baton charges to disperse the crowds.

The violent clashes resulted in at least four deaths and over 70 injuries, with many protesters requiring hospitalization.

In light of the escalating violence, Sonam Wangchuk decided to end his 15-day hunger strike. He appealed to the youth of Ladakh to stop the violence, saying it was harming their cause.

The Centre has scheduled a fresh round of talks with representatives from the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance on October 6, 2025, to discuss the demands for statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh.

The situation in Ladakh remains tense as authorities work to restore order and prepare for upcoming talks. The outcome of these discussions will be crucial in determining the future political status of Ladakh.
