Jack Quinn delivered an impressive performance, leading the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday evening, featuring a pivotal power-play goal early in the third period. Quinn earned two assists, complementing his goal and tying his career-best with three points in this notable NHL debut. Rookie goaltender Colten Ellis excelled as well, making 27 saves in his first NHL game, helping the Sabres clinch the win after a challenging start to the season.
The offensive dynamism of the Sabres was evident throughout the match. Tyson Kozak netted his second goal in as many games, while Josh Doan scored his third in three outings. Jason Zucker also contributed to the scoreline before having to leave the match due to an upper-body injury. Both Conor Timmins and Ryan McLeod were instrumental, each racking up two assists to enhance Buffalo's collective offensive effort.
Detroit initiated scoring, with J.T. Compher finding the net just three minutes into the second period. Dylan Larkin, the Red Wings’ captain, assisted his teammate, thereby extending his point streak to seven games and keeping Detroit in contention early on. Emmitt Finnie, too, made an impact, scoring his third goal in two matches to offer critical momentum for the Red Wings during key moments.
Buffalo wasted no time responding, with Zucker scoring from close range after a slick play involving Quinn, equalizing the score at 1-1 at 11:37 of the second period. Following this, Kozak put the Sabres ahead once more with goal number two, assisted by Quinn, before Finnie later reflected on Detroit's tenacity to tie it again with a goal just minutes afterward.
The decisive moment arrived in the third period, showcasing Buffalo’s prowess. Quinn’s power-play goal at 4:15 elevated the Sabres to a 3-2 lead, beating a distracted John Gibson in goal. Doan added a measure of comfort to the scoreline as he extended Buffalo's lead to 4-2 shortly thereafter with a shot from the left circle, reinforcing their hold on the game.
This triumph marked a much-needed lift for Buffalo, who improved their record to three wins in their last four outings following a rocky 0-3-0 start. On the other hand, the defeat shattered Detroit’s five-game winning streak, marking their first loss since the season opener against the Montreal Canadiens on October 9.
Quinn's standout performance highlighted his increasing relevance as a crucial offensive asset for the Sabres, injecting energy into the team's gameplay alongside Ellis' composed goaltending. Although Detroit witnessed notable contributions from Larkin and Finnie, they failed to match up against Buffalo’s well-rounded offensive play.
The match brimmed with competitiveness, with both sides exchanging goals and creating opportunities. Buffalo’s scoring depth, spearheaded by Quinn and bolstered by key assists from Doan, Zucker, and Kozak, proved to be the winning factor as they held back a determined Red Wings team.
Looking ahead, the Sabres are eager to carry forward this momentum into their upcoming fixtures, while Detroit is determined to bounce back and uphold their promising start to the season despite the recent setback.
