Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has sharply warned the United States to end its “deceitful actions” and to stop depending on what he called “traitorous hirelings.” This statement comes amid growing tensions following US President Donald Trump’s threats of military strikes against Iran, in response to the country’s harsh crackdown on protests, which activists report have claimed at least 646 lives.
Khamenei, who has ruled Iran since 1989, affirmed on social media that the Iranian people are united and steadfast against external threats. He stressed that the nation is fully aware of its adversaries and remains prepared to face challenges.
In parallel, Trump escalated economic pressure by imposing a 25% tariff on any country trading with Iran, aiming to economically isolate the regime. He also hinted at a range of potential interventions, from less risky to more severe measures, depending on the US’s objectives.
The recent protests began as demonstrations over economic difficulties but quickly evolved into one of the most serious challenges to Iran’s theocratic government since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that ousted the shah. Despite mounting casualties and widespread unrest, Iran continues to resist US pressures.
For decades, Iran has been a staunch opponent of the US. While Trump has repeatedly threatened military action, he has avoided pushing for regime change, citing lessons learned from the US involvement in Iraq.
Besides military threats, the US administration is reportedly considering ways to restore internet services in Iran, which Tehran has shut down to control the protests. There have also been diplomatic exchanges between the two nations, coordinated by Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff.
The situation remains highly volatile as Iran grapples with internal turmoil under mounting international pressure.
