A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Japan’s western Chugoku region on Tuesday, sending strong tremors across several surrounding areas and triggering multiple aftershocks, according to official seismic observations.
The epicentre of the earthquake was located in eastern Shimane Prefecture, an area that experiences regular seismic activity due to Japan’s complex tectonic setting. The tremor was felt across nearby prefectures, prompting authorities to swiftly activate emergency response and monitoring systems. Officials later confirmed that there was no threat of a tsunami, providing relief to coastal residents and local administrations.
The earthquake occurred relatively close to the Shimane Nuclear Power Station, which is situated about 32 kilometres from the epicentre. In response, nuclear safety authorities and plant operators immediately conducted precautionary inspections. Officials overseeing nuclear regulation confirmed that no irregularities, damage, or safety concerns were detected at the facility following the tremor.
Special attention is being given to the plant’s No. 2 reactor, which resumed commercial operations in December 2024 after remaining offline for several years in the wake of the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. Routine safety checks and system inspections are currently underway to assess any potential impact from the quake. So far, all evaluations indicate that the reactor and associated systems remain stable and fully secure.
Japan lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where several tectonic plates converge, making the country one of the most seismically active nations in the world. Earthquakes of varying intensity occur frequently, and the country maintains some of the world’s most advanced disaster preparedness and early warning systems.
Local authorities continue to closely monitor aftershock activity and have advised residents, particularly those living in older buildings and infrastructure, to remain cautious. Emergency services remain on standby as inspections of public facilities and transportation networks continue.
As of now, no casualties or major structural damage have been reported. Officials emphasized that monitoring will continue in the coming hours and days to ensure public safety and to respond promptly should conditions change.
