U.S. Vice President JD Vance has expressed hope that concerns surrounding Coupang, a U.S.-based e-commerce company, will be handled fairly to prevent unnecessary strain between the United States and South Korea. The statement was shared by South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on Friday.
The issue revolves around an ongoing investigation into Coupang following a major data leak incident. The case has drawn attention not only because of the scale of the reported leak but also due to the broader concerns raised by Coupang’s foreign investors.
According to the Prime Minister, Vice President Vance believes the matter should be resolved in a balanced and reasonable way. He emphasized that a fair process could help avoid growing tension and ensure that the situation does not damage the relationship between the two countries.
Meanwhile, two major U.S. investors in Coupang have taken the matter to the U.S. government, urging officials to examine South Korea’s investigation. The investors argued that the probe is unfairly targeting Coupang and treating the company differently because it is American.
They also warned that the ongoing investigation is hurting Coupang’s business operations and could impact the company’s reputation and investor confidence.
The situation highlights the increasing scrutiny faced by large tech and online commerce platforms, especially when consumer data security is involved. At the same time, the involvement of major international investors has added a diplomatic and trade-related dimension to what began as a corporate investigation.
Both sides now appear focused on ensuring the issue is handled in a way that protects consumers while avoiding any action that could be seen as politically or economically motivated.
