For actor John Skelley, being Harry Potter is more than a role; it symbolizes a journey woven through time, cities, and pivotal career moments. The character has consistently returned to his life, always at the right juncture.
Skelley now proudly takes the lead in Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as the adult wizard, set 19 years post-Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This milestone feels destined rather than merely a career move.
“It’s something that keeps coming back into my life,” Skelley reflects. “There were points when I thought that chapter was over, yet the door kept swinging back open.”
From Backup to Stardom
Skelley’s Potter journey began modestly as an understudy on Broadway, prepared to fill in when needed. His next step was leading the San Francisco production, which debuted in late 2019 before the pandemic halted performances across the nation.
Initially, Skelley wasn’t a hardcore Potter enthusiast; he had viewed the movies but hadn’t read the books. However, once cast, he eagerly absorbed all seven novels, reading one each week to fully embrace the wizarding universe.
Harry Potter has transformed into a key element of his existence, onstage and off. “The quantity of Harry Potter memorabilia surrounding me right now is incredible,” he chuckles.
A Journey Built on Determination
Originally from Minneapolis, Skelley began his acting venture at age eight with a school production. He went on to train at the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training Program, stepping into professional acting in 2007.
After relocating to New York in 2014 with his wife, Maren Searle, an actor herself, they navigated the challenging world of auditions, voice roles, and off-Broadway shows. Financial instability was a common challenge for them, making the Potter opportunity all the more transformative.
“My approach during auditions was straightforward — never give up early,” he recalls. This mindset proved beneficial when his agent posed the now-iconic question: “Are you ready to go to Hogwarts?”
Expanding the Potter Legacy
Skelley’s adventure with Potter extended across the country; post-pandemic, he joined the national tour, delighting audiences in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., with his wife also touring as part of the cast, adding a personal dimension to their journey.
Recently, he returned to Broadway, now as the leading Harry Potter instead of an understudy.
Director John Tiffany praises Skelley for his heartfelt and genuine portrayal. “He brings remarkable depth and authenticity to Harry,” Tiffany remarks. “Witnessing his growth over the past seven years has been a delight.”
Sharing the Stage and the Legacy
Skelley shares the stage with Tom Felton, known for his role as Draco Malfoy in the original films. Occasionally, Skelley’s wife understudies Ginny Weasley, allowing them to portray husband and wife in their performances.
The most moving experiences for Skelley stem from audience reactions.
“People my age are bringing their children,” he observes. “For many, it’s their first encounter with live theatre.”
That is the enchantment he hopes the audience carries home, beyond the spells and spectacle, fostering a renewed enthusiasm for live theatre.
“Theater is my life,” Skelley asserts. “If this show inspires even a handful to support live performances in their communities, it means everything to me.”
