Identified as the federal agent who fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis, Jonathan Ross is a veteran of both the Iraq War and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The incident occurred when Ross shot 37-year-old Renee Good as she attempted to drive away from federal officers. The FBI is now reviewing the situation amid concerns about the self-defense claim.
Background on Jonathan Ross
At 43 years old, Ross carries nearly two decades of law enforcement experience. Significant aspects of his professional life include:
Deployment in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 as part of the Indiana National Guard.
Served as a machine gunner on a combat patrol team.
Joined the US Border Patrol in 2007, stationed near El Paso, Texas.
Focused on drug cartels and human trafficking as a field intelligence specialist.
Became an ICE deportation officer in Minnesota in 2015.
Conducted fugitive operations targeting high-value suspects.
Led a team in the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Trained as a firearms instructor and participated in SWAT.
Fluent in Spanish and a graduate of the Border Patrol academy in New Mexico.
Prior Incident: Vehicle Assault
In June, during an arrest operation in Bloomington, Minnesota, Ross sustained serious injuries:
Was attempting to arrest a suspect when he was hit by a vehicle.
The suspect failed to respond to police signals.
Ross identified himself and blocked the car.
His arm became caught in the vehicle as it sped away.
Ross was dragged nearly a football field's length.
He attempted to deploy a Taser, but the suspect continued to flee.
Resulted in multiple injuries requiring extensive medical treatment.
Afterward, the suspect was found guilty of assault on a federal officer.
Details surrounding the Minneapolis Shooting
While the agent's name has not been officially released, it has been indicated that Ross was involved in a past incident where he was injured by a vehicle.
Authorities claim that Ross fired his weapon as he believed Good was attempting to run over federal agents. Footage of the incident has stirred public dissent and fueled calls for legal accountability.
The FBI, along with local Minnesota authorities, is participating in the investigation related to the use of lethal force.
Response from Officials
Vice President JD Vance praised the officer's service while refraining from naming him.
“This individual has served diligently for decades and has faced serious injuries while doing his job,” Vance mentioned.
Although the Department of Homeland Security abstained from confirming Ross's identity due to security concerns, they emphasized his extensive training and experience.
“He acted in accordance with his training,” stated DHS representative Tricia McLaughlin. “His life has been dedicated to public service.”
Next Steps in Investigation
Ross has not yet been reachable for comments. As the probes proceed, this case is becoming a critical issue in the broader discussion about federal law enforcement and their tactics.
