North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, has supervised the construction of a nuclear submarine and the launch of long-range missiles, as reported by state media. These actions underline North Korea’s continued ambition to enhance its military presence in light of escalating regional tensions.
According to KCNA, Kim visited the submarine construction site alongside his daughter, Ju Ae, who is speculated to be positioned as a possible successor. The nuclear-powered submarine, weighing 8,700 tons, is intended to carry surface-to-air missiles and has nearly completed its preparations for operational deployment.
On the eastern coast, North Korea conducted tests of long-range missiles capable of striking targets up to 200 kilometers away. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff acknowledged the missile launch and confirmed that they were informed of the preparations, ensuring necessary measures were in place. KCNA characterized the missile launch as a significant advancement in developing high-altitude strategic weaponry.
Kim Jong Un highlighted the importance of bolstering North Korea's nuclear capabilities and modernizing its naval forces. He framed these initiatives as vital for national security, pointing to an increasingly unstable global landscape. Additionally, North Korea criticized South Korea’s partnership with the United States on nuclear-powered submarines, alleging that such endeavors heighten regional tensions.
The North Korean regime also condemned the recent docking of a U.S. nuclear submarine, the Greeneville, in Busan for refueling. State media denounced this visit as an act that exacerbates military tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Moreover, concerns were raised about Japan's interest in nuclear arms, with North Korea claiming it was influenced by South Korea's military advancements.
Analysts suggest that Kim's hands-on approach at the submarine construction site and the missile tests sends a potent political message, underscoring the regime's commitment to fortifying its defense capabilities against perceived threats from neighboring nations and the U.S.
The ongoing development of nuclear submarines and advanced missile systems aligns with North Korea’s broader strategy to maintain its military strength while projecting power throughout the region. Experts warn that these actions may escalate tensions in East Asia and complicate diplomatic efforts aimed at denuclearization.
By taking an active role in these initiatives, Kim Jong Un reinforces his image as a resolute leader prioritizing national security, while the involvement of his daughter indicates potential plans for future leadership continuity.
The military developments in North Korea, particularly involving submarine construction and missile tests, are anticipated to remain a significant focus for adjacent countries, the United States, and international entities monitoring regional security.
