Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Kirti Vardhan Singh, has arrived in Cairo, Egypt, to represent India at the Gaza Peace Summit being held in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh. The summit aims to finalise an agreement that could bring an end to the ongoing war in Gaza and restore peace and stability in the region.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the minister wrote, “Arrived in the historic city of Cairo as the special representative of Prime Minister @narendramodi to attend the Gaza Peace Summit at Sharm el-Sheikh.” Singh’s visit underscores India’s support for global peace initiatives and its continued commitment to humanitarian efforts in conflict-affected regions.
According to the Egyptian Presidency, the Gaza Peace Summit will be held on Monday in Sharm el-Sheikh. The meeting will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and US President Donald Trump. The summit is expected to bring together leaders from over 20 countries to discuss steps toward ending the Israel-Hamas conflict and to lay the foundation for long-term peace and security in the Middle East.
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also attend the summit. His office confirmed, “The Secretary-General is travelling to Egypt to attend the Sharm el-Sheikh Summit for Peace on Monday. He is expected back at UN Headquarters on Wednesday.”
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, which was accepted by both Israel and Hamas. In a post on X, PM Modi said, “We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan. This reflects the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu. We hope the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza will bring them relief and pave the way for lasting peace.”
The ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas came into effect after intensive negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States. The first phase of the agreement includes Israeli troop withdrawals from major areas including Gaza City, Rafah, Khan Younis, and the northern parts of Gaza. It also ensures the opening of five crossings for humanitarian aid and the release of hostages and prisoners.
A Hamas source stated that the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt could reopen by the middle of next week for limited movement of people, although specific operational details are still being worked out.
The Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit is being seen as a historic opportunity to bring an end to months of violence and suffering in Gaza. Egypt, known for its active mediation role in the Middle East, hopes that this meeting will pave the way for permanent peace, regional cooperation, and humanitarian recovery.
As global attention turns to the Red Sea resort city, the world waits in hope that the Gaza Peace Summit will mark the beginning of a new chapter of peace and stability in the Middle East.
