The Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) has achieved a significant breakthrough in its energy sector with the early completion of the KM250 gas expansion project at the Khor Mor facility. Crescent Petroleum and Dana Gas PJSC announced that commercial gas sales have officially begun, arriving eight months ahead of the revised schedule.
The KM250 expansion increases Khor Mor’s processing capacity by 250 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d), marking a 50% rise and bringing total output to 750 MMscf/d. This additional gas production is expected to meet Iraq’s growing power needs and support industrial and infrastructure growth across the region.
Boosting Regional Power and Energy Supply
The surge in gas output from KM250 will enhance KRI’s electricity generation capabilities, supporting initiatives like the Runaki project, which aims to provide 24-hour power to residents. Beyond the Kurdistan Region, the expanded gas supply will reach other parts of Iraq, delivering cleaner energy to homes, industries, and critical infrastructure projects.
Alongside natural gas, the Khor Mor facility will now produce 7,000 barrels per day of condensate and 460 tonnes per day of LPG. These outputs will supplement the existing production of 15,200 barrels of condensate per day and 1,070 tonnes of LPG per day, boosting Iraq’s overall energy resources.
Project Scale and Advanced Technology
The $1.1 billion KM250 project is one of the largest private-sector energy infrastructure investments in Iraq in recent years. At its peak, the project employed over 10,000 workers, used more than 6,000 tonnes of steel, and recorded 6.2 million man-hours of labor.
KM250 integrates modern technologies, including AI-powered monitoring systems, high-efficiency compressors, and advanced sulphur and contaminant removal tools. These improvements maximize operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impact, aligning with Pearl Petroleum’s carbon neutrality goals.
Strengthening Energy Security and Sustainability
Since its founding in 2009, Pearl Petroleum has been a crucial energy provider in the KRI, supplying natural gas to four power plants and fulfilling more than 80% of the region’s demand. The company’s initiatives have benefitted over six million residents while contributing to a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and lower energy consumption in 2024.
With KM250 now operational, plans are underway to expand production further at Khor Mor and Chemchemal, unlocking additional gas resources to enhance Iraq’s energy security and sustainability.
