More than 1,300 apartment buildings in Kyiv are still without heating following a large-scale missile and drone attack earlier this week. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitalii Klitschko, confirmed the ongoing issue on Sunday, emphasizing the challenges faced by residents as they try to stay warm during harsh winter weather.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure have intensified significantly. These attacks have targeted power plants, heating systems, and other key facilities, causing widespread outages and leaving millions of people struggling without electricity and heat.
On Saturday, a massive strike hit Ukraine’s energy system once again. Explosions were heard across Kyiv overnight, and the attack left approximately 1.2 million homes and properties without power across the nation. This has made daily life extremely difficult, especially with freezing temperatures sweeping the region.
The lack of heating in over 1,300 apartment buildings in Kyiv is particularly alarming because many families now face the cold without any relief. Repair teams are working nonstop to fix the damage and restore power, but continued assaults on infrastructure make it difficult to return to normal quickly.
The repeated targeting of Ukraine’s energy grid highlights how critical these attacks are in the ongoing conflict. Disrupting heat and electricity is not only a tactical move but also causes severe hardship for civilians, who must endure freezing conditions without basic services.
Despite the efforts to restore energy, the situation remains fragile, and residents continue to face uncertainty. The attacks underline the harsh realities of war and the heavy toll it takes on everyday life, especially during the cold winter months.
