Tragic Landslide Capsizes Two Boats in Peru’s Ucayali, Leaving 12 Dead and Many Missing

Tragic Landslide Capsizes Two Boats in Peru’s Ucayali, Leaving 12 Dead and Many Missing

Post by : Meena Ariff

Yesterday, a catastrophic landslide led to the sinking of two boats at the river port of Iparia in Peru's Ucayali region, claiming the lives of at least 12 individuals, including three children, according to local authorities. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with many still unaccounted for.

The incident happened before dawn, caused by significant erosion along the banks of the Amazon river. One of the boats was reported to have been carrying around 50 passengers, while the other was believed to have been empty during the disaster.

Navy Captain Jonathan Novoa stated that nine bodies have been recovered so far, with 25 people sustaining injuries and approximately 40 others still missing. He highlighted that rescue efforts are being hampered by swift water currents, whirlpools, and dense fog.

Authorities are collaborating closely with families on-site to confirm the total number of people aboard the vessels. Video footage from the scene revealed luggage and goods floating in the river, as anguished relatives searched the riverbanks hopelessly.

The national emergency operations center has confirmed the deployment of navy personnel to assist with rescue and recovery efforts. Officials caution that the current flood season elevates the risk of additional disasters along the riverbanks in this area.

Rescue teams are imploring the public to exercise caution and cooperate as they work to locate the missing individuals and support those who have been affected.
