Former American football coach John Beam, widely recognised for his leadership role in the Netflix documentary series Last Chance U, was shot on Thursday inside the athletics building at Laney College in Oakland, California. The incident triggered an immediate campus lockdown as police rushed to the scene.
Authorities confirmed that the shooting occurred just before noon, with Beam identified as the only victim. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that have not yet been publicly detailed. Police said the attacker fled the scene and is still on the run.
Police Launch Search for Shooter
Officers described the suspect as a man wearing dark clothing and have not released additional identifying details. A motive is still unclear. After a thorough sweep of the campus, police announced there was no ongoing threat.
Laney College initially referred to the victim as a senior athletics staff member before confirming that it was indeed Beam, the college’s current athletic director.
A Beloved Coach With a Powerful Legacy
Beam, 66, spent over 40 years shaping football talent in Oakland, building programs known not only for their competitiveness but also for their commitment to young athletes’ futures. He retired from coaching last year, leaving behind a legacy marked by discipline, mentorship, and community impact.
His influence extends far beyond the football field. More than 20 athletes under his guidance went on to play professionally in the NFL, while over 100 earned Division 1 opportunities. Beam has often spoken about his mission to prepare players for success both on and off the field.
Star of Last Chance U’s Fifth Season
Beam’s story gained international attention in 2020 when he became the central figure of Season 5 of Last Chance U. The eight-part series showcased the Laney Eagles’ highs and lows while spotlighting the social and economic pressures faced in Oakland.
The show highlighted Beam as a no-nonsense coach devoted to shaping resilient young men — a portrayal that made him a fan favourite across the globe.
Community Shocked as Investigation Continues
The shooting has sparked concern throughout the Oakland sports and academic community. Fans, former players, and fellow coaches have expressed shock at the attack on a figure known for his deep involvement in education and youth development.
As police continue searching for the suspect, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Beam’s condition remains stable, according to local updates, and he is believed to be receiving ongoing treatment.
