Devastating Incident Forces Liloan Church to Halt Services

Devastating Incident Forces Liloan Church to Halt Services

Post by : Rameen Ariff

In a disturbing turn of events, the Archdiocese of Cebu has communicated profound sadness and serious concern following the discovery of a woman in her early 30s deceased in the Parish Church of San Fernando Rey, situated in Liloan, northern Cebu, on Friday, October 24. This violent act has compelled church officials to cease all public services until the premises can be restored to their sanctified state.

Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy characterized this event as a “serious violation” of the church’s sanctity. He announced, “I decree the temporary closure of the Parish Church of San Fernando Rey, Liloan. All public worship will be halted until appropriate canonical procedures are completed to remedy this desecration.” The Archdiocese reiterated its dedication to maintaining the sanctity of religious venues and requested the community to pray for the victim and her family.

Initial findings from CCTV footage and testimonies suggest that the woman was assaulted within the church. Discovered around 9:30 a.m. with visible injuries, including a head wound and signs of potential strangulation, eyewitnesses mentioned seeing her earlier in the company of a man who was subsequently asked to leave the church grounds.

Authorities have labeled the suspect as an unidentified male last seen donning a black shirt. The police are encouraging the public to assist in identifying both the victim and the suspect. Anyone with relevant information or missing relatives resembling the description is urged to contact the Liloan Municipal Police Station at 0998-598-6385.

This heartbreaking occurrence has rattled the local community, highlighting the urgent need for safety in sacred places of worship. The Archdiocese of Cebu’s immediate action to suspend services emphasizes the gravity of this desecration and its commitment to restore both peace and sanctity in the church.

This violent act underscores the importance of safeguarding sacred spaces. The Archdiocese of Cebu continues to invite the faithful to engage in prayers, extending solidarity to the grieving family during this harrowing time.
