Beginning in 2026, LIV Golf will implement a pivotal policy change that requires all newly signed players to participate in at least two Asian Tour International Series events each year. This new mandate was reported by Flushing It on X and aligns with LIV’s goals to deepen its ties with the Asian Tour and broaden its international appeal.
While this announcement marks a formalization of an ongoing trend, several prominent golfers, including Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Patrick Reed, have already competed in Asian Tour events since 2022. Previously voluntary, this commitment will now be essential for all new LIV Golf contracts starting next season.
From 2026 onward, each new player will participate in a total of 16 tournaments during the season: 14 on the LIV Golf schedule and 2 within the Asian Tour International Series. This initiative aims to bolster the competitive nature of the LIV circuit while significantly elevating the profile of the Asian Tour.
This strategy is part of the Saudi-backed league's commitment to enhancing its brand globally. LIV Golf’s motto, “Golf but louder,” embodies its mission to render the sport more engaging and internationally integrated. By collaborating with the Asian Tour, LIV aims to captivate broader audiences across Asia and enhance opportunities for emerging golfers.
The Asian Tour International Series was established with prize pools between $1.5 million and $2 million per tournament, aimed at fostering golf in Asia by hosting around 10 major events annually. This foundation is central to LIV’s strategy to reach beyond its established markets in Europe and North America. This partnership is anticipated to unveil opportunities for new talent while concurrently providing LIV’s star players enhanced ranking prospects.
Another factor influencing this new requirement may be the impending conclusion of LIV Golf's indemnity provision, expiring in 2025. This policy currently safeguards players from penalties assessed by the DP World Tour for participating in LIV events. Following its expiration, some athletes may be inclined to prioritize the Asian Tour, where LIV enjoys solid connections. Furthermore, given that LIV Golf tournaments do not award Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, the International Series presents a crucial pathway for players to sustain or enhance their rankings.
LIV’s team-building strategies are also evolving, leveraging sophisticated, data-driven scouting models influenced by sports betting analytics. This approach assists teams in pinpointing players whose statistics resonate with the LIV team structure. Currently, six roster positions remain available for the 2026 season, with many players with expiring contracts expected to renew, albeit under stricter financial arrangements.
Reports indicate that the era of extravagant signing bonuses is waning, as Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which funds LIV Golf, scales back its lavish financial offers. In 2024, Jon Rahm's $300 million deal generated headlines, alongside those of DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, and Sergio Garcia. The focus is now shifting from financial incentives to promoting competitive balance and expanding the league's global reach.
The upcoming International Series event is set to take place in the Philippines, featuring notable golfers like Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed. Concurrently, LIV Golf's fifth season will commence from February 5–7, 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Jon Rahm is expected to return with renewed vigor as he seeks to capture his third consecutive individual championship following a year with no major victories.
Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia has reportedly fulfilled his DP World Tour membership and is keen on returning for the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland. His comments have reignited conversations regarding the possible reintegration of LIV golfers into established international competitions like the Ryder Cup.
LIV Golf’s updated policy underscores its aim to balance competitiveness, growth, and international presence. By mandating participation in Asian Tour events, LIV not only supports the development of golf in Asia but also fortifies its global footprint. While this adjustment may impact player schedules and travel, it could significantly propel the sport into new realms.
