A man died after a fire broke out inside a residential flat at Block 8, Lorong Lew Lian, in Singapore's Upper Serangoon area on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The incident also left three other people needing medical treatment after they experienced breathing difficulties and were exposed to smoke. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received an alert about the Lorong Lew Lian fire at around 2.45pm. Emergency crews were immediately sent to the block after reports of a blaze inside one of the residential units. When firefighters reached the location, they found thick black smoke coming from a flat on the third floor. The heavy smoke indicated that the fire was burning inside the unit, prompting firefighters to begin rescue and firefighting operations.

Rescue Operation Underway

During the operation, firefighters discovered an unconscious man inside the living room of the affected flat. The man was quickly removed from the unit as emergency personnel attempted to save his life. Firefighters performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him before he was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for further medical treatment. Despite the emergency response and resuscitation efforts, the occupant later died. Three other people were also taken to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation and breathing difficulties. Authorities have not indicated that the three injured people suffered life-threatening injuries. The fire was mainly confined to the contents of the living room. SCDF firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control using a single water jet.

Around 30 Residents Evacuated

As a precautionary measure, around 30 people were evacuated from the building while firefighters dealt with the blaze. The evacuation was carried out to protect residents from smoke and any possible spread of the fire. The incident caused disruption to residents living in the block, with emergency services working at the scene to extinguish the flames and ensure that the affected area was safe. The exact cause of the flat fire has not yet been established. SCDF said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the blaze are currently underway.

Local MP Expresses Condolences

Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC Member of Parliament Seah Kian Peng also spoke about the incident. He said the occupant who died had been living in the area for many years and was known to him personally. The MP described the deceased as a friendly resident who would be missed by people in the community. He also said that agencies would work together to assist residents who had been affected or inconvenienced by the incident. Authorities are expected to examine the flat and surrounding circumstances as part of the investigation into the Singapore residential fire.

Series of Fatal Residential Fires

The latest incident has raised renewed concerns because it comes after several fatal residential fires in Singapore in recent weeks. On July 28, a 70-year-old man died following a fire at a flat in Block 39 Circuit Road. Just three days later, another person died after a fire at Block 309 Clementi Avenue 4. That incident also resulted in two firefighters being injured. On August 5, an 88-year-old man died two days after a fire at Block 684 Race Course Road. Four other people had been trapped inside the flat during that incident Another fatal fire occurred in a flat in Jurong East on August 16, when a 67-year-old man died. Around 50 residents were evacuated from the building following that incident.

The repeated incidents have once again highlighted the importance of fire safety in residential buildings. Fires inside homes can spread rapidly, while smoke can become a serious danger even when flames are limited to a particular room.
