Drone Attacks Cause Temporary Airport Closures in Moscow

Drone Attacks Cause Temporary Airport Closures in Moscow

Post by : Badri Ariffin

On Sunday, the operations of three major airports in Moscow were temporarily suspended following a large-scale drone offensive from Ukraine aimed at the city, leading to notable flight delays and heightened security concerns.

Authorities confirmed that Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports halted air traffic for about an hour in the afternoon. This closure occurred between 1300 GMT and 1400 GMT, affecting both domestic and international travel, especially at Vnukovo, the second-busiest hub in Moscow.

Russia's aviation authority stated the precautionary measure was enacted to protect passengers, as air defense systems were engaged around the capital. Flights gradually resumed normal schedules after the situation was stabilized.

Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that Russian forces intercepted and destroyed at least 27 UAVs that were targeting the city. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of significant damage in Moscow; however, the incident underlined the expanding scope of drone warfare on Russian soil.

Ukraine has yet to comment on the drone strikes. Since the conflict's onset in 2022, Kyiv has increasingly turned to drone tactics, even as its own cities are subjected to relentless strikes from Russian aircraft.

In a separate incident, the governor of Belgorod, a Russian region neighboring Ukraine, reported a fatal drone strike earlier that day, which struck a car carrying a family, resulting in one death and injuries to two others, including a four-year-old child.

These events highlight the ongoing impact of the years-long conflict on civilian life and critical infrastructure, with air travel and border areas increasingly becoming battlegrounds.
