A shocking case has come to light in Borgo Virgilio, a town near Mantua in northern Italy, where a 56-year-old man disguised himself as his deceased mother to keep claiming her pension. The man hid his mother’s body at home after she passed away in 2022 and continued withdrawing thousands of euros each year in her name.
The unusual story unfolded when the man visited the local council office earlier this month to renew his mother’s ID, which had expired. He wore makeup, a wig, women’s clothes, and even jewelry to look like his mother. However, a suspicious staff member noticed odd details like his thick neck, unusual wrinkles, and hands that didn’t look like those of an elderly woman. The man also struggled to maintain a female voice, occasionally slipping into masculine tones.
The mayor of Borgo Virgilio, Francesco Aporti, described the man’s disguise as detailed but imperfect, comparing it to the character played by Robin Williams in the movie "Mrs. Doubtfire," where a man dresses up as a woman. When police were alerted, they compared the man’s photo with that of his mother and then searched his home. There, in the laundry room, they found the hidden body of the woman.
Authorities revealed that the man was an unemployed nurse who earned around $61,000 (approximately Rs 50 lakh) per year through his mother’s pension and rental income from three properties. It was also discovered that he had tried to prevent the body from decaying by removing fluids using a syringe.
The man now faces serious charges, including fraud against the state, hiding a corpse, forging documents, and impersonating another person. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of the mother’s death, which is believed to be natural causes. Meanwhile, the man remains in jail while prosecutors await the autopsy report.
This strange and sad case highlights the lengths to which some individuals might go to continue receiving financial benefits illegally. The authorities continue their investigation to bring justice and prevent such fraud in the future.
